NRA Instructor - Home Firearms Safety

Live-Fire Included, Instructor Course

This 10-hour objective-based course includes classroom and range time where Instructor Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of firearm safety and proficiency through participation in practical teaching exercises, a written examination, and shooting qualification.


To qualify as an NRA Instructor:

  1. Instructor Candidates must be at least 21.

  2. Candidates must have successfully completed the basic course in the discipline they wish to be certified to teach, e.g. NRA Home Firearms Safety.

  3. Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline for which they wish to be certified.

  4. Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearm handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing pre-course questionnaires and qualification exercises administered by the NRA Certified Training Counselor.  Two attempts at each will be allowed in class, any further attempts will need to be scheduled at a later date as Individual Lessons.

  5. Candidates must satisfactorily complete the appropriate NRA Instructor Training Course and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor.


It is highly recommended that Instructor Candidates become a member of the National Rifle Association prior to attending the Instructor Course and use the same email address for all classes (membership can be added to your class registration at a discounted rate). If you do not know your NRA Membership Number, you can find it at NRA Member Services.


You will need to bring the following items to class:

  • Driver's License/ID

  • Firearm (unloaded discipline-specific gun)

  • Ammunition (enough to complete the attached shooting qualification twice)

  • Eye/Ear Protection & any other needed equipment

  • Computer (to review the PowerPoint presentation & Lesson Plans)

  • You may bring lunch and/or snacks, beverages are available

  • Successful completion of the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course & NRA Basic Instructor Training Course MUST be provided prior to the Instructor Course.
